R. Kelly’s Music Banned From 2 Radio Stations Following “Surviving R. Kelly”

Don’t expect to hear any songs from R. Kelly on KRNB or K104 in Dallas.

Dream Hampton did an impeccable job putting a spotlight on the numerous allegations of sexual abuse against R. Kelly. Since the docuseries aired, it reignited the conversation surrounding separating art from the artists. While many argue that you can listen to R. Kelly‘s music without supporting his alleged actions, two radio stations in Dallas feel the exact opposite. Earlier today, KRNB and K104 vowed to never spin another R. Kelly record on-air again.

Claudia Jordan, a radio host at KRNB, revealed on-air that the radio station will no longer be supporting R. Kelly‘s music anymore. Jordan admitted that Kellz makes incredible music, but the allegations against him are too horrid to separate the art from the artist in this case.

“I just feel like, in good conscience, we just can’t continue to support this guy. Sadly there are a lot of people out there and what they do in their work—they are talented people—but they have demons. And I feel like as a woman that is an advocate for other women… We cannot support this man anymore,” she said. “I’ve been a victim of abuse from a man, and it wasn’t as extreme as this. But reading all the comments, we have to at some point take a stance.”

K104’s DeDe McGuire agreed with Jordan and stated she’s happy a stance is being taken against R. Kelly. She stated that if the courts aren’t doing the victims justice, then his music must be removed from their rotation.

“I’m glad that radio is taking that stance. Radio has always played a major role in the black community,” she said. “That goes back to the civil rights movement. We have to take care of our own. If the courts won’t take care of [Kelly] in terms of punishing him, then we’ll stop playing his music as punishment.”

Victoria Monet is a prolific songwriter. Although the singer does a lot of work behind the scenes, her fans don’t often get to hear about how she creates magic with her collaborators. Her most recent success came through her working with Ariana Grande. The long-time collaborators and friends wrote the highly personal song called, “thank u, next.”

She hasn’t yet really grasped the impact of the number 1 track.

I’m not sure that I’m comprehending it quite yet. Honestly, sometimes I forget because Ariana is my friend until she goes out in the world and starts releasing the music that we’ve done. We’re chilling at the house, in onesies, watching silly movies, being regular people. When we put our ideas into the world it becomes this massive thing in her life and in everyone’s world and it’s like huh?

Apparently, the hit would not have materialized without their friendship.

Since I’m her friend I know that she always says, “Thank you, next.” She says “thank you, next” all the time. I started singing, [starts singing] “Thank you, next.” We were trying to make harmonies to the next part and she’s like “Bitch, are you saying thank u, next?” So we started writing the concept based on that title. It’s so her. I wouldn’t have come up with that if I were in the room with someone else.

Nicki Minaj's Mom Roped Into Rapper's $50K Lawsuit, Served With Legal Documents: Report

Lawyers are going to great lengths to get through to the rapper.

Nicki Minaj got into some legal trouble that has now affected her mother, Carol Maraj. The matriarch was served with legal documents pertaining to a lawsuit. Although the legal action is intended for Nicki, the company that issued the service are aiming to get the judge to rule the action as valid to allow them to pursue the lawsuit.

According to court documents retrieved by The Blast, Cahuenga Inc. claims their attempts to serve Nicki Minaj directly has been ongoing for several months to no avail. Their efforts have been thwarted by Nicki's staff. The company states that their agents have “been regularly prevented from effectuating such service by Defendants bodyguards and personal security.”

The rapper's schedule has also been cited as an issue: the “Defendant is perpetually ‘on tour’ traveling, or alternatively staying in various hotel rooms rather than a fixed location.” As such, the “Plaintiff has been unable to identify a specific location that can be defined as Defendant’s actual place of business.”

When Cahuenga went to Nicki Minaj's home in Balwin, New York, they found Maraj senior instead. They served her with the lawsuit within this context. Soon after, the company received a call from a lawyer who claimed he was not authorized to accept the service. Cahuenga is petitioning for the judge to validate the completion of the service or allow for additional time to locate Nicki.

The lawsuit was initiated by Cahuenga in 2017, accusing Minaj of breaching a 2011 contract in relation to the NBA All-Star Weekend. The suit explains how they signed a deal with the defendant, who agreed to host an event at Siren Studios in Hollywood. She is said to have been paid $53,000 prior to the event. They are suing her for damages in excess of $53K for arriving 90 minutes late and leaving the event within 30 minutes, which caused a loss of profit for the company. This is their second attempt since their original filing in 2014.
